It did turn out to be the differential unit, not wheel bearings or CV joints.
MB dealer is going to honor the Starmark on my 95 S420 and plans to replace the entire center section of the Differential. What he called the "pumkin". Keeping my present CV with axles. Supposed to be a new unit from MB. The only downside at this point is I'm not driving my car. They are even picking up the tab on a rental car. Says it will be there about a week.

I am hoping for my silent runner to return !!
