I'm sorry but your use of the word mechanic is in error. A mechanic would not be in this position. A mechanic would know that the first test would be system fuel pressure. A mechanic would know that if he manually pushed down the air flow meter with the pump running and fuel pressure he would get fuel out the injectors whether the motor was running or not. OR he would know the reason why not!
He doesn't do this for money I hope.
