'97 E300 722.6 Transmission oil pump replacement

Recently I have been having a rather loud whine noise coming from the drivetrain while the vehicle is at a complete stop, in gear, such as reverse or drive and everything it at operating temperature. I took it in to my independent mechanic and had the fluid and filter replaced. Last time I had the filter and fluid replaced was within or right at 40,000 miles. They drained the fluid and said it didn't look too bad, not too dark. I test drove it and it made the exact same noise and they have come to a conclusion that the oil pump for the transmission is making that noise. They have checked everything that they could have underneath, making sure bolts are torques to spec and there is good pressure and that the pump is operating properly but making this noise.

The next step is to get some pricing on the pump and labor time to replace it. They informed that that fortuantely they won't have to remove the transmission from the car as this pump is accessible through the bell housing...

Anyone ever had this before? The transmission has been running perfectly fine before the noise and currently so it is apparent that there hasn't been any serious damage within this transmission and there were metal particles found in the fluid that were mentioned.
