Intermittent A/C compressor

Just picked up my '85 California-spec 300TD from having the A/C system serviced (purge, charge, leak test).

One small leak noted on an A/C hose, but not a major one (barely noticeable according to the tech).

Bigger issue was that they could not seem to keep the A/C compressor running. While attempting to charge the system, they could only get about 1.5 lbs into the system, then the compressor would disengage.

They could get it to come on, but not remain on. If running, once cycled off it would not restart.

They are recommending replacement of the compressor, at a cost of $1.6K

I'd like to know what might be causing the compressor to freeze up (no pun intended), and possible troubleshooting help.

Thanks all as always
