That was the problem with my '87 300e...cruising along with nice, cold air, then all of sudden...back to warm for no apparent reason - the system had refrigerant, no electrical gremlins found-although I did replaced the whole HVAC switch panel - perhaps this was a mistake... MB of SF id'd the problem and the clutch was replaced - I've had no problems since.
