Something I've noticed recently and don't get, is the GPAs some students (high school, I believe) get that are in the 4.1 to 4.3 range, or thereabouts (!?!). What the...?
I heard an interview on NPR a few years ago with an author of a book on how the use of one's hands relates to overall learning. I wish I had noted the author and title because I haven't been able to find it through web searches. One point that stood out: he claimed that various supervisors at high tech companies noticed that engineers who had semi-extensive experience in working on cars or houses with their dad or uncles through late teens and early 20s showed a noticeably stronger ability to learn new skills, adapt to changing circumstances than their less advantaged peers.
Remarkable stuff, and it fits in with a pet theory I have that kids should learn/do some skilled manual work between high school and college. Too many cases of kids graduating college with barely a clue about how the world works and what to do with their expensive education.
