Did Mercedes paint these cars with the front fenders on the car, or off? The reason I ask is that if they were originally painted with the fenders off the car, and then bolted on later in the assembly process, one would expect the cap screws holding the fender on to be unpainted. In the photo of the engine compartment, they are clearly painted. Is that evidence of anything, or not?

On my W124 which has never ever been in an accident, the fender screws on the inside of the engine compartment are painted, just like on that 240D. I'm 99.99% sure that's how it's supposed to be.
