Yes, I would disconnect the battery, AND I would charge it prior to starting the car when you return.

On my '88 there are no ill-effects from disconnecting the battery as there are on some later (and maybe earlier) models. The radio has an internal battery that refreshes the memory, so the station codes are not lost when you remove the main battery.
