Increased seismic activity isn't necessarily a bad thing. Yes, it can be the precursor of a large earthquake (or a volcano getting ready to do its thing if one of those happens to be in the vicinity), but small earthquakes tend to release built-up stress also. There are places along the San Andreas in California where continued activity keeps the stresses from building to the point where a big one can occur. On the other hand, where the fault has been "locked" for years stresses are building and the possibility of the "big one" increases.
