if you push the close button can you hear the sun roof motor work? I mean, have someone sit in the car and push the button while you listen in the trunk. If the motor works but doesn't close the roof then its likely that you just have stripped gears.

I would unbolt the motor and see if it falls off the cable, or if the cable pulls out easily. It sounds like you either have a faulty sun roof switch (ie, not giving power to the motor when in the close position) or striped gears in the sunroof motor.
