Unfortunately, I don't have a working compression gauge. However, I would think an improperly closing valve would get noisy (but maybe not with hydraulic lifters). Since this was sudden, no overheating or other associated events, I'm hoping compression is not as likely as simply a blocked fuel distributor port? Anyway, I'll have to get a gauge to be sure.
