I believe there was a problem in the past with some members being harassed and receiving rude email. If some one emails me through the forum, and includes their email address, I usually send them my email address on my reply, so we can continue the exchange. I like the initial screening the site provides, however, after the earlier experiences some members had on the board from a disgruntled former member. It is initially less convenient, but more secure. Members who don't want this can add their email address to their profile, I suppose.

Regarding posting pics or documents, you are correct about pics being worth 1000 words, and posting pics is routinely done. (for example: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?threadid=18259 ).
