I had similar problems when I first bought my 76 450sl.
My fuel system was gunked up - a bottle of techron fuel cleaner
helped a lot. But you could have a vacuum leak, too.

If you try the Techron ($6) and it doesn't help at all, then you
can start zeroing in on other issues.
