First off, he didn't say if he is thinking about clerk (mail sorter) or carrier (yer basic mailman). I delivered mail for a few years when I was a lot younger. Very healthful job, walking in the outdoors all day. Gets you in great shape (unlike now which is kinda pear shaped). The pay is pretty good but not great. The bennies are pretty good. If I had stayed with it, I could have retired 10 years ago and found someting else to do for gainful employment / entertainment if I had so chosen. Delivering mail really isn't a bad job. There is, of course, some question about its future (like, how many more years before E-Mail takes over completely?).

Postal clerk, on the other hand, would seem to me to be just mind-numbing boredom, although some people do it for years and seem to enjoy it.
