Howdy & Thanks in advance for the assistance:

Subject is a 1982 280SL - that’s the Euro edition SL - 107 Body with the 6 cyl 280 motor. The Euro lights were changed to US on import of course, but I don't think that there is a significant wiring change from the German edition.


Problem: Turn signals (left or right, front upper & lower, back and dash indicator) ALL just stopped working. It seems to me there are actually front uppers -visible from the side & part of the main light assembly that is in the fender. And front lower -the rectangular amber light under bumper and next to the fogs. It is also a running light.

Other findings: Lower Front Left Side turn signal does not light in running light mode. Switching bulb with that from the right side proves it is not the bulb: the lower front left circuit is not lighting while lower right one does (in running light mode).

Upper front (which I do not think are running lights too) DO light in 4 way emergency flasher mode--albeit right is strong & fine and left is much weaker.

Rear Left side running light does not light either (bulb good, reverse lights, brake lights, etc all work). Both Rear 4 way flasher does work..utilizng amber turn signal (which otherwise doesn't work as signal).

Summary: Left side has problems in running or turn modes. 4 way emergency lights do seem to work (or tries to), but the separate left side run lights remain off.

I have tried the general looking for loose wires, etc. Including an especially good remount/connection of the 4 way switch & wires (on center consol). No change. In trunk, I see one apparently broken/stub of a wire, nutted down to the left rear lighting assembly. I see no wire for whatever it may have been to if a recent break. Presuming it is/was a ground I have jumped it and tried touching/connecting to whatever...to no avail.

Any suggestions?

Can anyone tell me where the flasher relay (a small 4 pronged black rectangular box) is in this specific Euro car??...as I actually have a new one I can put in anyway...although with the other 1 sided problems, I don't think this really will be a solution.
