thanks for your input. sorry, i forgot to mention that i'm using the w124 cd as reference for this project. i took out the fan shroud and loosened the nut you mentioned before i started turning the tensioning nut to slacken the belt as directed by the cd procedures for poly v-belt removal. when i turn the tensioning nut, the tension pointer moves to the slacken position but the belt does not slacken. when i try to tighten the tensioning nut, the tension pointer moves to the tightened position but the belts do not tighten either. the belt just stays in the same tension level. i think there's something wrong with my tensioner. any advice on how i should move forward? thanks again
