Jeff, from what I've read over the years I agree that you should avoid the early production years of the ML ... 1998 & 1999. We drove a used 1998 a few years back and it rode like a truck. Supposedly the 2006 ML's are a dramatic improvement although I realize that you don't plan to purchase a new one.
