For as little as it costs to change the whole thing, I guess that makes sense. Regarding wiping the inside clean, I bet I lost a half quart or more of transmission fluid when I removed it the first time. I did replace it, but I'll be a little more prepared this time. There's no way to get it completely clean and dry in there until all the dripping stops. I didn't do that last time. I either need to let it drip until it stops or maybe I need to raise the front end of the car some more.

what we do at the shop when we replace the plug is juat drain the pan, if the fluid is good, save it in a clean container and reuse it.
