1991 350 SDL (USA) was factory equipped with R-12 and a cross flow condenser. This condenser is still available from M-B and will work with either R-12 or R-134a. Installing it in your '86 420 will require minimal modication; functional dual auxiliary fans are necessary for maximum cooling.
