I am not sure, but I think it's electronc. I still don't like the idea of pulling it out if it's not a factory set-up. I would like to find a unit that just senses the noise and raises the volume. I had an early 80's Nissan 200SX Turbo that had it and it worked.

I will look into the electric speedometer.
