A great deal on a used car is the early 90's Dodge Colt/Mitsubishi Mirage. You can get them for almost nothing and they are great cars and that little engine is very torqy (OK that's not really a word) and gets good mileage. Just find one that isn't beat to death. I had a '90 hatchback for a while and really thought it was great for the money (1500.00 in 1999). It was the 1.5L I think or maybe 1.6L.

My mother had a '95 Saturn and it had a cracked head and that was typical for that year. And she babied it and did dealer everything, and she barely goes above 55. Before that it got recalled for new valves.
