Can anyone confirm what the engine shocks are for?

Greetings All,

I still have that slight annoying engine vibration at idle, neutral and more pronounced in drive with my foot on the brake. As mentioned I had changed the drivers side motor mount and the right seems to be fine. Does the engine shock do any vibration absorbsion during idling periods, or is it's main job to keep the engine from jumping out from under the hood when you shut it down? I kind of hear a clunk when I shut the engine down, like it has bottomed something out and made a semi metal to metal contact. Is this a result of a worn engine shock? Is there anyway to check a shock to see if it's doing it's job? I looked at both sides, and of course physically it looks fine but I am able to move the top cup covering the rubber in circles with a little force. Should the upper metal cup be taunt and not be able to move? Any input would be helpful to rid me of these small vibes.

Charles
