It may not be a clogged screen .... the second Mercedes I owned was a great 1979 240D that one day decided not to go up a particular hill. Every other hill (steeper or less fine) but just one particular hill.
Acted like it just ran out of fuel. It turned out the fuel inlet was being blocked by several silver tear-off tabs from bottles of RedLine Diesel fuel conditioner. I managed to remove these tabs going through the rear window parcel shelf after removing the emergency kit and fuel sending unit. I had to use a mirror and a flashlight but I spied them!
Fished them out with a long grasping hook.
Oh, and the car then went right up the hill.
