Remember that the major pieces of what PC users call "Office" was developed on the Mac (Word and Excel) and ported over to the PC. It is the defacto "standard" and the files are fully compatible across platforms.

The Mac comes with a very good email client. Safari is a great browser, but there is also IE Explorer and Firefox for Mac.
