The W123 250 was never imported officially into the U.S., only by the infamous Grey Market.
It could have some English tags as required by import rules at the time. This car should NOT have a VIN, only a chassis and engine number (which are different IDs from an U.S. VIN).
This particular model was produced in very small numbers (the 200, 230/230E and the 280/280E were the best sellers on the W123 line-up). It basically served as an option on markerts that penalized heavily with taxes engines above 2,500 c.c., like Italy for example.
In the 80's, the Grey Market imported many unsual M.B. to the U.S.. Some examples: W116 280S/SE and 350SE/SEL and on the W126 the 280SE/SEL.
