It's one of those things, Mike. If it had been a volcanic eruption in Hawai'i, MTI would've been all over it. I still wish that I could've gone to NYC to help on 9/11. Proximity is everything.
For younger guys, there's the military. There is something about intense situations that bonds people. I believe it affects men more than women (is that cultural? I don't know). Once you've experienced it, the memory of the exhiliration never leaves you. Even lard-assed old plow-horses can still hear the bugle at the starting gate. I do everything I can to encourage my young charges to volunteer. If for the experience if nothing else. And there is far, far more than personal experience.
