Nationalistic pride should be no part of this. Getting help to the people ASAP should be the first priority. The US should have and still should ask for help.
Japan made the same mistake with the Kobe earthquake, "saying they could handle it" and people suffered and died as a result. With all the help in the world you will not be able to get to the people soon enough.
