Transmission Type?

According to my owner's manual (1995 E320 wagon) in order for the car to be powered by a gasoline engine the auto shifter must have a transmission mode switch which offers normal and economy modes. According to the book, only diesel models have the auto trans I have, with no extra switches at all. Can anyone advise me on the trans situation? Those with 94-95 e320's, does yours have the mode switches or not? The trans feels fairly clunky overall, not impressed. It really limits the excellent engine.
