Jeff, we own three 300CE's and they're great cars ... attractive body style and fun to drive. You're taking the proper approach by having a PPI done by a MB-trained mechanic. If the car is as advertised it's a steal at twice the price. From what I've read the timing chain and guides should be good for 150,000 miles or so ... provided the oil was changed regularly. One of ours has 131,500 miles and I'm going to get our independent's advice on when to change the timing chain and guides.
