My '91 also hesitates to shift when cold. I have finally used this delay as a reminder (to me and the other family drivers) that one must drive gently until the engine warms up.

I often run this car at 75-80 MPH, sometimes faster when on the highway. Around town I take it easy and I get consistantly 21.5 MPG.

If it were my car, I would run a large bottle of Techron Fuel Injector (not Fuel System) Cleaner in less than a full tank prior to an oil change.

Also check the fuel mixture. Could be worn out injectors, dirty injectors or a O2 sensor going south.

I have noticed, believe it or not, these cars like to be driven hard every so often (after properly warmed up). I do not hesitate to accelerate very hard having the RPMs go right up to redline. Seems to clean them out and they run better.

My 2 cents,

Haasman
