License Plate Lights Replacement - Rear

My "light bulb out" light comes on everytime I turn the lights on, and I noted that the left (driver side) license plate light is out. I went to the Operator's Manual that came with the car, and found nothing on License Plate Light Replacement. NOTHING! I removed the plate on top of the lights (by removing 3 screws)... but there appear to be no access to the light bulbs.
Where can I locate the procedure for replacing these bulbs?
Or, how does one access these light bulbs for replacement?
Does the trunk interior lining have to be removed, or can I access the bulbs from the outside...
