They definitely should be kept in good shape. Ages and ages ago they came with an oil filter, but I probably haven't seen that for 20 years or more.

I have let them get away from me before and turn brittle. Upon changing them I have never noticed any difference in oil pressure, but maybe my gauge sight is not as calibrated as some of you.
