trouble shooting poor radio reception

I am looking for help on improving my radio reception.

the head unit was a clarion cd player, which would only pick up about two stations locally. A while back I took the antenna apart, and ended up converting it to a manual antenna as the motor drive is a mess. I dont care if the antenna goes up or down, just to have it pull in a few more stations.

How do I trouble shoot to see if it is the antenna, the cable or somethig else? Also, what is that black cable with a threaded coller that looks like some type of antenna cable, It is not hooked up but one end is near the antenna motor, the other is near the head unit?

Jason

Are you saying the lead from the front will not actually attach to the antenna because the connectors are not the same.....
