Question 6.5 speakers in the rear deck of a 126?

Hi, is it possible to put 6.5 inch speakers in the rear deck of a 126? I have a nice set of profile 6.5 inch 2-ways that I'd like to put in (Got em free). Is there any way at all to put them in so that they can fit in the stock locations? I'd kinda like to keep the stock grills if possible.

I see that the stock speakers have "humps" in the rear deck that they fit in. Can I put the 6.5's under the "humps" and leave the stock grill in place (with a hollow spot between grill and speaker).

P.S. The profiles are not a very deep speaker, quite slim.

Edit: Pics of the finished project are down towards the bottom of the thread.

Thanks!

Hi Matt,

You can put 6.5" speakers in most rear decks on a 126 but different
years had different setups. Mine is an `88 and it works fine.

If you do a search in this forum, there's a thread with pictures showing
how to put an Infiniti 6.5" coax in the existing factory hole.

Good luck...

Bill

Matt,

They tell me it's called 'Desert Taupe'. It's a color you don't see that
often.

Good luck with your install. I've got a new JL audio amp and new
speakers all the way around coming for mine and will put them in
next week. Added a new Sony HU in the dash yesterday. Can't
wait to hear it when it's done.

Thanks!

I searched for and found the write up you were talking about. Looks like the later 80's had a different mount in the back. I'll try and see what can be done.

On color, you're right, other than your car, I have never seen one the same color as mine. Nice to know what it's called.

You can see my car on my website. www.icsrepair.com Look for the personal pages and pull mine up. (Be forwarned, the pics are large and will take quite a while to load if you are on dial up.)

Matt,

Yep, your rear deck is different than mine. I think you've got 4x6 cutouts.
I know some have swapped their rear deck for one from a later model. That
may be a solution for you but I have no idea how complicated it is.

Hitman, who's on this forum quite a bit has done it.

I checked out your page. My car has the cream beige interior and you
have grey. Yours is probably easier to keep clean. From your pics, it looks
like your grill screen is messed up (although it might must be the pics). You
can get a replacement for $22.50 and they also sell the little chrome strips,
too at performance4benz.com and possibly here on Fastlane, too.

My grill screen is fine. The picture just looks funny due to being resized. But, the metal strips are bent. (Plus, now I have my 250K High Mileage badge! )

I got the 4x6's out of the rear. Looks like if I cut out the foam pad, i can put the 6.5's in and put the grills back on top (with a hollow spot in between).

ya, I have the grey, it is pretty easy to keep clean. I feel for ya with beige....

Hey, is the grill screen suposed to be light gray (like mine is) or darker, like black or dark grey?

It's light grey. Some people remove the screen and spray paint them black
which can look good. There's a thread with pictures on how to do that one
here in the forum, too. It's pretty simple, the only hassle is putting the
clips back on the screen when you're done.

The finished product!

Here are the first five pictures.

This is how you mount 6.5 inch speakers in the old-style 126 rear decks.

Hi Matt,

You might want to put the small Dynamat kit around those
speakers. You might get some noise where those tears are
in the material around the speakers.

What kind of 6.5 did you go with?

I went the best 6.5's I could get, free ones!

They are Profile SP-62. While not the highest of quality, they are alot better than stock!

As for those tears, that's where I cut my hole too big, so I stuffed in some excess material to fill it up.

Doesn't seem to cause any noise (I don't listen at High volumes though.)

Cool. Well congratulations on your upgrade.

My JL Audios are on the way and I hope to get the install done
late next week. Right now it's nice just to be able to play CD's.
I'm also looking forward to having XM in the car. I've got it in
my Z3 roadster and love it.

Bill
