CD Changer Repair or Troubleshooting

The CD changer on my 94 E320 Wagon goes through a load sequence for all 6 cd's, then sends a "NO CD" message.
I have all 6 cd's properly loaded and I hear the unit cycling them in and out. I unplugged the changer to reboot it, with no success. The Model # is MC-3194, built in 1991. p/n A 002 820 42 89
Questions:
1. Any way to tell what is wrong with it, perhaps the laser is out??
2. If the laser is bad, is it a plug in type repair or is alignment necessary?
3. Lots of replacement units on ebay. What model #'s will directly replace mine?
4. Anyone want to sell me a replacement unit?
Many thanks!

unplugging the changer works less often than it does...in terms of resetting.
i would suggest pulling the fuse to the head unit for a few minutes. fuse
should be in rear panel of the head unit. if you pull battery cable to accom-
plish this, it is likely to reset other memory settings such as seats, mirrors,
windows, roof..... oh, be sure to have radio code available if you pull the
fuse. i've used this technique on 3 E320s (99, 99, and 00) successfully.
anecdotal evidence, i know but hey, it worked.

It lives again!!

Raymond,

I pulled the changer out and left it by my desk for a day or so and, after re-reading your advice, re-installed it and damned if it doesn't work like new again.

I've never before found an electronic device that didn't reboot o.k. after being shut off for about 15-30 seconds, so I am surprised that leaving the power off for a very long time (days) did the trick.

Anyway, many thanks.

defies normal troubleshooting logic. nonetheless, i'm going to file this one
with the other strange tips which seems to fix the whacked operation of
the MB sound system. tnx for the report!
