Does your 126 have round or oval(ish) speakers in the front?
My '88 had something sort of oval, if I remember right. I found a pair of Pioneer 2way speakers. 4x6's - Pioneer has a ring that can be easily removed to fit the odd shape of the 126 dash speaker hole. Here is a pic w/o the "ring" that makes it square.

My dash takes the oval 4x6's. But, I figured that if these 3.5 inch Bose units (now ended, but plenty of other's available...) were a good choice, I could very easily make a mount plate out of steel for them, and coat it with dynamat to keep it from ringing.
But, will these Bose speakers have probs due to not being in the dash they were intended for? Enclosure size differences, etc....... My mom's Jeep has the Infinity Gold system with an aftermarket Blaupunkt Montreal head unit, sounds dead fabulous. If I new that system would work perfectly in my Benz, you can bet I'd be retrofitting one from a boneyard! ![]() -Matt

You mean these:
How is the Bass response on these by themselves? I'm not a rapper or rocker, but I like to have som bass fill. I.E. I like my kick drum to go "thud" not "tick" when they hit... ![]()

Thats the exact pair I have in my car. your not going to get any bass at all out if them, It's a VERY small speaker. It does provide you with a clean kick drum, and smooth mids. Highs can be a bit overwhelming, but that's what eq's are for. I recomend a small sub in the trunk. Even a small sealed cab. will (usually) deliver a nice "thud" (focused around 120ish Hz)

I notice that those are 2 ohm speakers.....that's probably going to cause probs......I see that there are also GTO6426's instead of GTO6427's, only difference being they're 4 ohm instead.......Probably a better bet as an amp is a future upgrade, not a current measure.

Well, the JBL name is well reviered......I'd love to have MB Quart, but on my budget, it aint gonna happen. In fact, if someone responds to my other thread here about what cars I should look at in a boneyard, I might try that as that's a great way to get high quality aftermarket systems for a song..... (Great pun eh? )

I've retrofitted 6.5's into the rear of my SD. I'm looking at a set of Blaupunkt of Infinity component speaker systems to go back there......
Those should have some decent bass.......

Hi deerefanatic.
Here are two sources for cheap Mb Quarts. http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/ProductList.aspx?CategoryID=15&ManufacturerID=624 http://www.discountjungle.net/category/speakers_-_car_____search_by_brand_____mb_quart.htm Louis.

The Quarts will probably have the most broad range of response, but the cone size alone is going to limit the amount of low end output. You might be able to dip down into the upper end of midbass, but that would be about it.
As for enclosure/dash airspace, most of these speakers are designed for IB (or free-air) use. Just make sure you have a nice tight snug fit for your speaker adapter plate. You don't want an immediate passage for air from the front to the back of the speaker. Outside of that, if you do a steel plate and dynamat it, you should be good. The dynamat on the bottom side will also help to adapt to the contour of the dash insert, making for a more snug fit when screwed down. |

The Bose will not be of the same caliber of MB Quart or alot of other aftermarket speakers. If using the factory locations, be sure to check the off-axis response of whatever you are interested in. Alot of speakers are at their best when properly aligned, and most times factory locations do not offer that. So off-axis response will be important. And if firing off the windshield from the stock dash, the high frequencies will reflect badly, so you may also want to look into something with a very laid back tweet...nothing too harsh at all, because the windshield will only make it worse.
