129 antennas--anyone tried...

to replace a mast on the combo cellular/radio antenna? Mine works perfectly (surprise), but has a broken mast at the top.MB says a replacement mast is not available for that antenna, but of course, a complete antenna is--for only $600 or so.
2 questons: has anyone tried a replacement mast for that antenna ( I wonder if Hirschmann actually makes one--or if there is another vendor), and 2, has anyone replaced that antenna with the conventional style one from an earlier 129 SL (the one that doesn't have the cellular function, since it's useless/obsolete anyway).

Yes it seems to me that I have put just a normal chrome mast in one of those, I may have had to shorten the plastic coil a bit, wouldn't go all the way in other wise, but the chrome part itself was fine once i trimmed the plastic.
You have the one that looks like fiberglas or something on the top section of mast, right?

I replaced my Am/FM/Ph antenna on my 94 e320 Wagon with a Hirschmann AUTA 2040. It comes with a package of adapters to match the fender shape. Bought in on eBay for $38 from "watselect." His web site didn't list the antenna being compatable with the wagon due to fender shape. However, I modified one of the included adapters to fit.

It has slightly better reception than the original.

I would check with another dealer, or Becker, I cant believe the part is unavailable!
I just looked at FAST LANE (BuyParts) at the top of this page, they have a Hirshmann mast @100 or another at half the price! They also show the whole antenna!

It does seem to me that this is why I put a chromey one in a car with this type of antenna, couldn't come up with a mast like that. Like the original poster said, no need for it anymore anyways, it's an analog phone, you're lucky if you can even get a contract for it.
