I bought my 82 300SD a few months ago and it has an aftermarket am/fm stereo w/CD plr. What I'd like to do is buy a newer Mercedes radio (more recent than a 1982 model) which has CD capability but still reflecting the same basic look.

I know it exists. Basically, what I'm trying to do is give my car the near original look with the convenience of CD's. What I'm NOT looking for is one of those small remotes that you "paste" to your dash with the wire squirreling around.!

o Does anyone know of some model numbers of newer units?
o Which CD changers work best (if any) with Mercedes radios?
o Should installation be left for the professional or is it a pretty easy job?

oo One other question...how do I get that wood console off from around the gearshift to clean underneath it?

I'm not sure about the wiring in your year vehicle, but here is one to consider:

Not sure what years this radio showed up in vehicles, but I know it's the same one as in my 94 E420.

As far as the center console wood goes, it snaps up. I believe after you remove the one screw holding it down, start pulling it upwards while holding down the back window switches. The instructions are buried in here:
