headunit brands?

I have a 1982 300SD and am looking to upgrade the headunit. I want something that has USB (not iPod). I was looking at Blaupunkt, Kenwood and maybe (gag) Alpine. I like the Blaupunkt St. Louis because it has USB, 4096 colors and supposedly you can upload a picture to it as a background but I hear it doesn't work too well.

My question is which unit is the best sounding for this interior? Secondly, I like features but sound is more important. Does anyone know how reliable each unit is? Does anyone have any experience with these units?

I've been very happy with Alpine h/u.

I have a 9851 in the 300TE and I have a 9885 for the 300CE.

I have XM and iPod connections in both units. I believe that the 9885 has a provision for a USB connection for your MP3 music.

I've also had an alpine h/u installed in my previous '91 420SEL.

I once had a sony h/u. Did not like it at all.

Wiring it right is important because you need to bypass the old amps and the Benz fader control switch.

Good luck!

I have been a huge Pioneer Headunit fan!!!

I have had everything from Alpines, Eclipse, JVC, Blaupunkt, Clarion, Panasonic, off-brands, you name it. Nothing comes close to Pioneer in terms of Quality, Sound, and Performance. I had a problem with a Pioneer Unit before, and within the week, I had a new head-unit in my car.
