Hi Everyone. I have read the past archives on Subs but still have some questions because most of the reading seem a little advance for me. What I want is QUALITY NO VOLUME in the sub I am going to get. Clean and crisp thumps is what I want. Don't care for "feeling" the bass in through my seats. So the following are my questions. IF they have been answered before, please point me to past threads, I might have just missed them.

1. What sub and amp to get. Past threads mostly give install techniques. I have no experience with car audio subs, but I know what I want from it as I mentioned it above.

2. In the long "500E" thread there was a mention of MDF, and fastening the amp to this with carpet in between. What is MDF?

3. one 12" or two 10"?

4. From the previous threads, everyone says the trunk is just too air tight and that port holes have to be cut. Can I get away with not doing that? I would rather not cut any holes and not remove my rear speakers as I do get the occasional rear passenger.

Thanks for the input and help. I just want to get the right stuff the first time. Thanks

1. One eight inch or 10 inch shallow mount subwoofer. I'll talk more about the reason for the shallow mount below...

2. MDF is medium density fiberboard. It is commonly used for making subwoofer boxes.

3. The larger the sub, the deeper it hits. You said you want QUALITY and not excessive volume, so a 12 may not be a good idea. An 10 inch sub or maybe even an 8 incher will be better.

4. The trunks on the W123 and W124 are very isolated from the passenger compartment. For your application, I would mount the sub where the first aid kit is. Remove the first aid kit and make your own small enclosure out of MDF and secure it well so it does not rattle. There is limited mounting depth here, so that's why I recommend a shallow mount subwoofer. Make some measurements so you know exactly how much space you have.

This is what I did.

I took My sealed ported enclosure sub box with a 10" woofer in it.

I cut a 4 inch hole int he first aid kit and routed the port through the deck and into the box.

All the sub sound comes intot he car now.

Of course what i need to do now is to dynamat the rear deack and other areas to knock out some of the extra vibration, but what a difference it makes.
