While it's up, wipe off the excess greasy buildup, then wipe a thin layer of white lithium grease from top to bottom.

sometimes the geared retractor looses a tooth, sometimes its just dirt, sometimes you just have to help it down , raise it up clean it like Joe mentioned, help it back down, and that should fix it , if not you may need a new mast

Make sure you did not change the switch position for the antenna. Did it go half way up or half way down.

It might be the switch going bad in general. If you can grab one in the junkyard off of another w126 (even my 82 SDs have the switch) its worth the dollar and peace of mind.

probably have a broken or worn antenna cord. Only way to tell is to remove. loosen mounting bolt, turn on car radio and whole thing should come out. If the cord is broken then you have to remove the unit itself, take it apart to remove the broken piece that is left behind, remount and thread new antenna . Pretty easy R/R except for separating halves of the hirschman

Most likely one of the plastic wheels stop is broken or the metal roller in the base has a notch worn in it. The unit stops movement when enough load is put on the motor. Heavy binding makes it stop.

Best plan is to call hirschmann audio (number is on here or benzworld I forget) and get a parts repair kit that comes with all of that. Makes it like new. Also comes with a new rubber belt for the motor.

you COULD , do that or just remove and open it up , see what you got, I had the same issue and all it was was a broken mast nylon lead

but he says it goes all the way up. Odd if it was broken that it would stop only in 1 direction.

I took it apart and it was a kink. It was a PITA to get the kink out.
