W124 TV / Video?

Has anybody set up a TV and VCR in an E-Class (W124) for the rear passengers? I'd like to install a monitor between the seats so my kids can watch videos. Where could the VCR go?

Any experience or ideas?

Thanks!

Dennis there are not many choice for a vcr in a 124 car other than the trunk. I mounted mine to the rear deck and I have a remote control the allows operation from the passangers compartment. I installed the rear screen into the right seats headrest it is a 5.6". The is a company that I sell there products and they make a replacement headrest for mercedes with the screen already loaded into the headrest so there is no cutting of the original.

Scott,

I guess I would need two headrest / monitors then. How much are they? Can you tell me the brand so I can do some research on them?

I was also thinking of a single, pedistal mounted screen that I could somehow bolt on to the center armrest. Any ideas for that approach?

Thanks for your help!

Here is a pic of one in a new S-55 I can check the price for you tomorrow the brand is savv the other way to go is a bracket off of one of the headrests that would allow the monitor to be centered in the car. Here is a pic

Greg and Scott,

Thanks for all the information. Wow, the bill can sure add up fast! Too keep the costs down, I'm thinking of a single monitor in the middle and a VCR in the trunk. I guess the tradeoff is that with a VCR you have to stop the car to change the tape. The reason I wouldn't want DVD right now is because we want to tape the kids' favorite shows from TV and play them. I hear that a read/write version of DVD will be out soon though. In that case, VHS will be obsolete pretty quickly I'm sure.

Scott, if you could send me your price on the head rest monitor I would appreciate it. Hopefully the 5.6" screen is cheaper than the $900 for Greg's 6.8"!

Thanks again guys,

I recently ordered 4 monitors (1x7" visor mount, 2x5" headrest,
1x7" roof mount with TV tuner and antena), a VCP player,
a DVD player, a 10 Disc DVD/CD changer, plus the FM modulator, Video amplifier/spliter, AC/DC convertor, to outfit my S500 and
a Honda Oddessy. Total cost $1770 for all the components, not
including installation. (btw, can someone suggest a good local
installer in Columbus area ?)

The place I bought those from:

http://www.theautoaccessories.com

They are very reasonable. 5" starts at about $120, 7" about
$320, and they have a good selection. Some places charge twice as much for the same products. For example, Columbus Car Audio wants $1200 and $1800 for the 10" and 13" monitors, the same models from the above site are $699 and $799
respectively, so do a little shoping.
Check Ebay and you will also see a lot of vendors selling these
monitors.

Good luck

Thanks Joe,

I sure like those prices better. I'll look into the site you referenced.

I am not real comfy buying from ebay, but I'll have to try it someday.

Thanks!

I simply bought a portable DVD player at Fry's.
7" LCD, DVD, all for $499 (Aiwa XWD-7, I think).
Much cheaper than buying automotive products. Can be used on the plane and in any other cars. My $.02.

I agree a portable DVD-player is choice, and you can bring it with you, esp. for those long airplane rides!

However, here's another idea:

Use your laptop! Although not the thinnest laptop available, (Dell Latitude CPx), it is plenty fast, with a big 15-inch screen, and with a Y-adapter for two headphones, and an inverter, you have a DVD player and a computer (I have StreetAtlas loaded).

All you have to do is get a mobile laptop car-mount installed and you're good to go!
