I've tried much luck with installing speakers on the doors, but only to no avail. Most of the woofers out there are just too big for the doors to handle. Anyhow, there are these woofers made my Infinity, called Uniplanes, and I plan to install them on the side of the doors, along with the tweeters near the door handle. Do you guys think this is a good idea? If not, where would be the best place to place the speakers/tweeter and how would I do that? Thanks in advance.

The Uniplanes are very good and produce surprising bass... they are designed for very small enclosures, but they should work well in the doors.
Are you using an amp to drive them? Bri ------------------ Brian Drought 1991 300CE http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~drought/ ICQ: 2180069 |

I'm planning to run an Alpine amp that pumps out 35 watts per channel to them, along with some Polk Dx tweeters. I tried drilling in the doors, but there is just too much "stuff" behind it. Thanks for the tip. Any ideas on where I should exactly place them?

Do you mean cutting into the doors, or does it already have a hole for the woofer in the door? If cutting in, be very very careful!
The amp sounds fine for the Uniplanes. Just dont run them below 40hz.. set the highpass on the Alpine amp to say 50hz. (if it has one) Bri ------------------ Brian Drought 1991 300CE http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~drought/ ICQ: 2180069 |

I've just completed installing all of my components in my car. I have Kappa Uniplanes on the side of the door and Polk Tweets on the dash. They sound great, but the only problem is that the Uni's don't play good bass. They're great for what they are, but regular 5 1/4 or 6 1/2 have a much greater advantage over these. No drilling was required, except for cutting the panel. Bostons were used to replace the rear 4 inche speakers.

You didnt answer my question:
Are you putting the Uniplanes IN the door panels (so the back is inside the door and just front showing), or just ON them? Which size Uniplanes? Bri ------------------ Brian Drought 1991 300CE http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~drought/ ICQ: 2180069 |

i was able to install 5.25 woofers on the
front doors. i had to cut the metal panel of the door. use MB quart speakers they are shorter and the kit includes spacer rings. |

how did you drill holes in the door? I tried doing that, but the metal was just too thick. What tools did you use? As of now, I have Infinity Uniplanes that are bolted onto to the door, but the metal is not cut out, only the door panel.

Bri,
To answer your question, I have 6 1/2 Uniplanes, and they are just mounted on the metal, and the speaker kinda showing. |

I'm still not clear... does the speaker go back into the door, or does it not??
To put it another way, can the air get from the back of the speakers into the cabin? If so, this is why you're getting no bass, you just cant do this!!! The air from the back is moving the other way to the air infront, and the two will cancel eachother out! My Infinity uniplanes, in 0.5cuft boxes created enough bass to shake the car! oh really? Is there something that I don't know about? I have the Uniplanes that are midranges, and by the way it looks, I don't think that they can pump out a load of bass? Interesting.
The way I mounted the Uniplanes as the speakers do not go back into the door. I didn't want to cut the metal, or couldn't. Perhaps you can explain to me the way air moves and what's the efficient way to create bass with the Uniplanes. Thanks again. |

As I explained before, if the air can get past the back of the speaker to your ear, it is cancelling the bass from the front...i.e. you have not installed them right. You cannot just put a speaker ON a door and expect it to work, this is why all home speakers are in cabinets, so the back waves cannot cancel out the front waves.
The Uniplanes are good speakers, but like ANY speakers, must be installed correttly. Suggest you take your car to an install shop who will be more than happy to cut into your door ;-) Bri ------------------ Brian Drought 1991 300CE http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~drought/ ICQ: 2180069 |

you can use a circular saw or a sheet metal cutter. it looks like a a regular scissor but its huge. make sure you pick the right speaker cause you only have 2.25 inch of space or the power window mechanism will hit the speaker. if you have a question email me directly.
