I have a pair of 6.5 three way infinity Kappas in the rear deck of my 1980 300D and the cones on them a competly destroyed. I dont believe it is form playing music to loud but from the sun or miosture? The cones are very brittle and pieces can be broken off very easily. I jsut dont know. I bought them from Crutchfield and i have had them replaced once already (and now for the second time, but cruthcfield has excelent serviece) due to what looked like the cone was melting the cone on one looks like its melted but the other is destroyed. I have Kappas in the dash (3.5) and they are fine.
Has any one seen this or do you know what it could be?

Are the 3ways designed for free air mounting? If not, then the cones dont have enough damping, and will bounce off the end stop easily, overheating the voice coil and making the speaker grate when you move it...

but the cone deteriation sounds like sun to be honest with you. Is it a foam or rubber surround? Very odd.
