scott.. noise question for ya

Scott, I just installed my hands free kit, ran all the wires, hooked them all up and it works great. The only issue I have is some noise coming through the speaker for the unit when the phone is plugged in, kind of like a little whine. I ran the wires and hooked them up per the instructions that came with the unit. Thinking it was a ground, I moved the ground to several different places and it made no difference.

In an attempt to reduce the noise, I rewired both the positive and negative connections to inside the car and not on the battery direct like it had in the instructions, though I had it wired tot he battery first (like the instructions said) before I changed it and the noise remained the same.

ITs not a problem really, but annoying to hear it when the phone is in use.

Should I take some magnets or ferrite coils or whatever and wrap them in wire and put it inline on the power lead? Should I move the ignition wire to another wire that works off ignition? I tapped off the radio ignition wire. The radio in the car has no noise.

Is the noise I am getting just from the phone itself putting noise in?

I haven't yet hooked up the wired antenna yet, could this be the cause of the noise?

I did not wire it to the car speaker, I wired it to its little speaker it came with.

Should I try to get some kind of noise supressor for the speaker connection instead?

I would ask my cell phone guy, but I trust your input more than his as you deal with this kind stuff day in and day out, and my cell guy doesn't install these too often, there isn't much demand from people for them. He would just have me talk to his installer.

I know the principals used for noise reduction, but I am unsure of exactly what to use.

Please advise, I'd like to clean it up if at all possible.

Thanks in advance scott, you rock!

Alon

ok I figured it out. Thinking I should check it all out, I pulled it all back apart, not too hard or long to do, and traced each wire I ran. Sure enough, the mic wire was pierced by a screw ever so slightly, grounding it out, causing the noise. After repairing the cut int he line and re running it away form all screws, it no longer makes any noise.

For fun, while I was messing with wiring, I decided to modify the unit a bit. hehe I wired the speaker output of the control module for the hands free kit to my fader switch, and wired the dash speaker and the speaker that came with the unit. I can now use both, the dash, or the motorola speaker at will. Very cool mod.

All that is left is placing the antenna on the glass, but I have to swap the antenna, as the one I grabbed doesn't hook up to the unit. I have to get one with a different connector, or a connector adapter of some sort. Not a big deal, running the antenna is simple and easy as there is minimal panel pulling to wire it up.
