BE1432 Install Help
I am having trouble getting sound out of the Becker 1432 in my '92 400E. The head unit gets power and tunes, but there is no sound from the speakers.
Here's what happened: The original head unit had gremlins that made it randomly attempt to eject a cassette when none was present. I finally had my mechanic just disconnect the head unit, and I lived without a stereo. Eventually I purchased a new head unit on eBay. I've attempted to install it, but no sound comes from the speakers. It powers up, displays, tunes, and even the antenna reacts to my turning the head unit on or off. Just no sound. I reinstalled the old head unit and got the exact same behavior. In installing the head unit, I am connecting five connectors. Looking at the rear of the unit, left to right, they are: - large, round din-8 databus connector - squarish security connector with auto-disconnect clip - black rectangular five-pin connector - black rectangular four-pin (one pin offset) connector at the top right corner (battery, ignition, etc.) - small lug connector for antenna at bottom right corner These can be seen in the image below (which was originally posted by Scott of La Jolla Audio in another thread). Does anyone have any idea what I could be doing wrong? I know I could be barking up the entirely wrong tree, and the problem could be in the amps or pre-amp in the trunk. That would be a big coincidence, though. Any help would be gladly accepted! Thanks, Ross

The receiver/amp is actually in the trunk. What's in the dash is just a head unit. I believe the receiver/amp is found on the right side of the trunk behind the trim, not totally sure (uh.........if it's not there, it's on the left side
).There is a fuse on top of the amp you should check, I can't remember now if a blown fuse there "kills" the whole system or if you might get the results you are getting. One thing to try is to leave the system on for a minute and see if you get an error number on the radio display. You of course should check for tight connections at the receiver and the head unit. Gilly PS If everything appears to be plugged in, etc, no blown fuse, i would suspect a bad receiver/amp (part in the trunk) |

I,m having the same problem with my 1432. Did you ever locate the problem?

No, Dick, I'm sorry to say I never tracked it down. The new head unit I finally got properly installed offered no relief. A very experienced Mercedes mechanic I consulted (at ******** Los Gatos, Los Gatos, CA) seemed pretty confident that it was one or both tof the amps in the trunk. I simply lived without a stereo until I sold the 400E earlier this year. (Apparently, having a toddler legally obligates you to get an SUV. At least that's what my wife told me. :-)
Good luck with your Becker. They can be maddening. Regards, Ross

Thanks. I guess perservance is what it will take to resolve. In reading various threads replacing the 1432 sounds dauntng. I'll try the amps to see what happens. Dick

No Sound
Hi RossGard,
The problem you are experiencing seems to be with the Tuner pack in the rear quarter panel. If you had sound but lost it all of the sudden I would say you may have lost a fuse. But if the sound is just not there and the fuses are good then I would suspect the tuner pack 1st. The amps are seperated, one for each side of the car, front and rear. Normally you would not lose both at the same time. The tuner pack on the otherhand controls all audio being processed and therefore is more likely to be the problem. If you were losing communications with the Head unit you would get an error code of "E 2". Let me know if I can help you in any way. We service these units and can get the problem confirmed and repaired for you. Cleeve Morrison La Jolla Audio Repair www.mercedesradiorepair.net |
