Newbie Question
Hi all.
I am trying to remove the rear deck speakers in my 124. I used the guide from mercedesshop.com but still have had no success. Has anyone done this and could possibly walk me through it? I cannot locate the clips that hold the speaker grille in place. Thanks Sam

Different speaker grills in 124
I replaced the rear speakers in my 87 300D and found that by prying the grill off carefully with my fingers worked for me.
Putting them back on reqired several attempts. I don't think all 124's rear speaker grills are the same as they changed from time to time. In the end, I discovered that my 5" Harman Kappa replacements would not fit so I desided to cut a hole and flush mounted each speaker where the headrest parks in the down position. Placement of the speaker there was my only choice and it did not obscure the headrest much from going all the way down, only the sound, but I usually leave them up anyway. Also, I mounted the 4" front speakers w/tweeter, in a silicone bed as they also do not fit correctly, and the dash grill's do cover perfectly. Sooty Taillight ![]() |

Hate to butt-insky, as I have 126, but you might try removing the entire package shelf. On mine (85 380SE), it comes right out after the rear seatback has been lifted out. The grilles might be attached from underneath, is what I'm thinking, and this way, you won't risk breaking anything trying to pry them out.

Response: Newbie question... I'm not sure about how the 126 is arranged on the back deck, but I know the 124 is integral with the body of the car and there is nothing other than the carpet that can be removed!
I read in another thread where upon hard looking, availability for speakers to fit MB's specks may still be available to fit like the originals, which by the way are inferior in sound reproduction to what is available today, less they fit, produce sound world's appart from what was available back in the mid 80's now almost 20 years ago! The trick is to dampen the loose vibration to a minimum or best not at all. A speacker cannot vibrate the material around it and produce clean quality sound. I have a Harman/Kardon Traffic-Pro CD-AM-FM-GPS global positioning sat nav, which is made by Becker, and fits all MB's dash's. Even the color plastic matches the rest of the dash. They look like they belong! The sound quality is measured at 20Hz-20Khz in the CD mode only on this unit, (wish they did this for FM too!) which is the cleanest of amplified sound...in other words, you can turn the volume up all the way full between tracks and you will hear no hum, no nothing. Good speakers are a must for these values, non of the good speakers fit my 124, so I cut holes in the rear deck, integral with the body of the 124, to acommodate the available sound quality produced by the Traffic-pro. You also need to purchase a seperate amp and bass speakers for the bass response (subwoofer) to bring this player to the starting line with all of the other stereo decks available on the market. Quite honestly, the sound quality of the Traffic-Pro is not that great compaired with many others. But unlike the others, it does speak German, and other languages, and tells you where to go! I'm just installing some Bostons (ctx5) in the front dash and need to fill the small gaps with something. Does anyone know if silicone comes in dark colors? The rear speakers are another issue, though...could anything be any harder than replacing the rear speaker in '91 300e??? Are my only choices to cut (I'm not even sure the rotozip will be strong enough to cut through the steel), or go with a box....does anyone have any current pictures of boxes installed in a 124 (did a search of old posts, but many pictures would not show..)

Yes, you can buy GE silicone in any hardware store and they come in black too.
Using boxes on the rear deck will obstruct your fold-down head rests. Had I realized I would have had to cut holes, I would have ordered larger than the 5" Infinity Kappa speakers I got. But I didn't feel like going through the hassle of sending back. I used my Bosch jig saw with a metal cutting blade from inside the trunk. There is enough room to move the saw if you are savvy! Does anyone out there know where the "Hall Effect" sender is located?????? I need to hook-up to the speed sensor wire coming from that sender. Sooty Taillight ![]() |
