Every time after I wash my car my brake disks turn rusty and then turn back. Yesterday after I washed my car I noticed that some of the rust fell on my wheels. If I polish the disks will this problem go away? Thanks.

Dear Mike,
I don't know if you are refering to the disk itself (the area the brake pad contacts) or the hub (obviosly the remainder that the pads do not contact) so I will attempt to address both. In either case your disks are made of cast iron or a derivitive and as a result will rust imediately after polishing...so don't. If you are refering ot the disk itself, unfortunatly the water attacks the iron on contact so the only thing I can suggest is to attempt to keep your disks as dry as possible when washing. (You will also notice this happens when it rains). As for the hub, there is a process called cadmium plating that can be done to your disks (allow for some serious down time on your vehicle because of shipping, less if it can be done locally) or you can opt to purchase aftermarket ones with the plating already applied. I chose to get mine cross-drilled for better cooling and that "techie" look. I hope this helps. Paul

As I read this, I am understanding that the water that contains rust dripped onto the inside of your wheels and that is what you want to remove, right?

Sounds like you would have had the disks wet, then air dry long enough to form rust, usually overnight. Then you might have put water on the wheels/disks again? Enough to drip and stain?

Solution is simple, drive the car to get the rust off before wetting the wheels again.

The rust on the contact surface is completely normal. First time you touch the brake pedal all of it is gone. Just wash wheels as normal then gently apply the brakes once before driving as usual.
