Unhappy Replacing Mercedes Star Emblem on Rear Trunklid

Does anyone know why a replacement star for the trunk on my '91 300E might not fit properly? I had the car repainted recently and bought a new OEM Mercedes star for the paint shop to apply after the old one was removed. Well, for some reason, only one of the three "prongs" is inserted all the way. The other two are slightly out of the holes, so two thirds of the star is "floating" over the painted surface of the trunk. My old star was flat against the trunk, not floating. My question is, how do I get the new star off, without damaging it, and put it back on properly. Do you think the paint shop may have broken the old prongs when they removed the original and parts of the prongs are still inside?

Signed,

Frustrated.

Same thing happened to me

Just recently got my car back from the painter and he did the same thing. I ended up removing and reorienting it so that it fit flush on the trunk. I am glad he paid better attention to the quality of his paint skills as opposed to his mechanical ability.

Mine is totally floated.

The letters (2.5 turbo . . . . ) fully attach to the paint. Rubber in between.

220SEb

95benzman,
No, the car is a 1963 220 SEB cabriolet. I just recently had it painted Black with a green pearl clearcoat after stripping it to bare metal. Forturnately, having previously been an Arizona car, the only rust was a small area in both spare tire wells and a little bondo we removed from the left door. You requested another picture. Here is a picture of a front view. If you would like pictures during the painting and finished product, give me your email so I can email without the byte restrictions of this forum. Gregg
