confusing Meguiars' cleaner: ScratchX & Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner.

In the product description of Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner, there is a word "non-abrasive".

The name "ScratchX" gives a feeling that it removes scratch. So it make me guess that it has more abrasives.

However, below is Meguiars response.

We have several different paint cleaners, the least aggressive product we make is Scratch X, this is designed more for darker colored vehicles, the next one would be the Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner, and the most aggressive product you can use by hand is our Medallion Paint Cleaner

I just sent the link to Mike Phillips @ Meguiars, he'll be able to explain in detail the differences in the products you've asked about.

By the way their is yet another hand applied Meguiars Polish called Color X. From my experience it works amazingly well to remove oxidation and haze from paint.

Thanks.
I think removing scratch is done by very slightly cutting the top clear coat surface.
I want to find a gentle cleaner.
Because my car is white, swirl is not too big problem. I want to live with some swirls and save the clear coat thickness.

Believe it or not many waxes have mild paint cleaners built into them which helps keep your paint clean and protected. A mild polish will naturally remove some clear coat but from my experience it would be very difficult to remove a measurable amount of paint by hand.

I would personally use a product like Meguiars #9 Swirl Remover in your situation. It has very very mild abrasives and fillers to give you a smooth even surface for your wax. Mike might have a better solution so I'll let him chime in.

On the lable of #9, cut level is indicated.
The bar runs to 10. And #9's cut level is 3.

By the way, on the label of Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner,
it reads "to prepare new and damaged paint finishes for waxing.".

New car does not need swirl and scratch removal.

So this phrase made me believe that Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner gives least amount of cut.

Hi ktlimq,

Sorry for the delay, I have been so busy, it's hard to keep up with e-mails.

The Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner is less aggressive than the ScratchX. The DCPC is a purely chemical cleaner, while the ScratchX uses both chemical cleaners and microscopic diminishing abrasives.

It was probably just an honest mistake on the part of the Customer Care Rep.

Hope this helps. By the way, I'm buffing out a black 1993 Corvette for this weekends Plastic Fantastic in San Diego. If anyone is interested in learning more about detailing, check out this thread.
